New York, NY (April 27, 2009) -The Teagle Foundation today announced the election of four new members to its Board of Directors: Andrew Delbanco, Julian Clarence Levi Professor in the Humanities at Columbia University; Barbara Benioff Friedman, Chair of the Board at Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion; Grant Porter, Vice Chairman at Barclays Capital; and Cornelia Small, Chair of the Board at Smith College and former Chief Investment Officer of Scudder Kemper Investments.
"We are very excited to welcome Andrew Delbanco, Barbara Benioff Friedman, Grant Porter and Cornelia Small to Teagle's Board of Directors," said W. Robert Connor, President of the Teagle Foundation. "Our Foundation depends on its Board to shape policy in two crucial ways - investing its funds wisely and using the income gained in that way to strengthen student learning in colleges and universities. These new Board members bring expertise and good judgment in both of these critical areas - a great benefit for The Teagle Foundation."
Andrew Delbanco has taught for over 20 years at Columbia University and is currently the Julian Clarence Levi Professor in the Humanities and Director of American Studies. Dr. Delbanco won the Great Teacher Award from the Society of Columbia Graduates in 2006, was named the New York State Scholar of the Year by the New York Council for the Humanities in 2003, and in 2001 he was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and named by Time Magazine as "America's Best Social Critic." He has written a number of books including Melville: His World and Work (2005), which won the Lionel Trilling Award and was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Award in biography, and is currently working on a book entitled College: What It Was, Is, and Should Be. Dr. Delbanco is also a trustee of the Library of America and the Association of American Colleges & Universities.
Barbara Benioff Friedman was the first woman elected to lead the Board of Governors of Hebrew Union College-Institute of Religion in 2007 after serving on its Board for 14 years. A Trustee Emerita of Cornell University, she served on its Board for 12 years as Co-Chair of the Academic Affairs Committee, Chair of the Membership Committee and Vice-Chair of the Board. Mrs. Friedman is currently the Vice-Chair of the Board of Overseers of Weill-Cornell Medical College and is on the Advisory Board of Weill Cornell-Qatar, with which she has been involved since its inception. A graduate of the College of Arts and Sciences at Cornell University, Mrs. Freidman also taught in the New York City public school system in Harlem.
Grant Porter joined Barclays Capital as a Vice Chairman in September 2008 after holding the same position at Lehman Brothers. During his time at Lehman Brothers, Mr. Porter received the Chairman's Award for Extraordinary Client Service, the President's Award for Corporate Citizenship and led the firm's Global Natural Resources Investment Banking for 16 years. In addition to his service on the Board of Trustees of The Taft School and on the Advisory Board of New Providence Asset Management, Mr. Porter is also a member of the Business Committee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He received his BA from Brown University and is a graduate of the Harvard Business School's Program for Management Development.
Cornelia Small retired from the position of Chief Investment Officer of Scudder Kemper Investments in 2000 after working for thirty years in the investment management field. Mrs. Small previously held the positions of Director of Equity Research, Director of Portfolio Management and Chief Economist at Scudder Kemper Investments. She is a trustee of the Fidelity Funds and served as a non-trustee member of the Smith College Investment Committee for two years before joining its Board of Directors, which she now chairs. Mrs. Small earned her bachelor's degree from Smith College and has a master's degree in international development from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.
